This is part 1 of a two part article looking at the emerging field of Authentic Leadership. As this fields rallying cry is “to thine own self be true” the article briefly charts the study of Self and the challenge that posses to the study of this latest leadership paradigm.

It looks at the work undertaken to date to conceptualise the term, considers a more contemporary working definition and highlights four constructs underlying this definition. Finally, it will briefly consider some differences to existing leadership theories. Part two of the article will go on to explore how Coaching Psychology can help in the development of Authentic Leadership.
